The 98th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 11th September 1873 over the 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Marie Stuart, a chestnut filly by Scottish Chief out of Morgan la Faye, owned by Mr James Merry. A field of 8 runners contested the race, although there were 189 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 4725 sovereigns.
